Short Summary On What I Thought Of The Play, Our Town. myartist13 Our Town in a play that was written by Thornton Wilder. Wilder sets the play in the 1930’s and uses the actions of the Stage Manager to create the town of Grover's Corners for the audience. Although I found it quite annoying, the stage manager seems to be completely aware of his relationship with the audience and seemed not to mind. Our Town has little scenery, no set and minimal props. All through this play the characters are going about their daily routines. The play portrays their lives and what they do every day. In the start the two main characters, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, have small crushes on each other. By the end of the play they are completely in love and eventually get married. They deal with the problems of growing up in a small town and having everyone know what is happening. There is town gossip and at one point Emily has to put George in his place. Even though they have to deal with little problems they make it in the end and things work out. There are a lot of questions through the play, but they are eventually answered completely. In Our Town the characters experience tragedy, romance and some drama. Our Town has three acts that each represents daily life, love and marriage, and death. The characters are shown as unaware to life's important lessons and seemed quite arrogant. The way that this is presented is touching, and had a huge impact on the way that I look at life. I feel that I can relate to the characters better because of the genuineness they have. I enjoyed reading this book not only because it is simplistic but also because Our Town has shown me to have a unique appreciation for life. Its simplicity and honesty is something that not only drew me in but kept me reading. The people in Grover's Corner live, love, and die in ways that are so true to life, it doesn't feel unnatural or dramatized. From this book I have had many thoughts such as, am I living in the moment? Am I taking the ones I love for granted? Do I appreciate this gift of life each one of us has been given? Comments
