The Case Of The Flying Employees tata69 The Case of the High Flying Employees Patricia Clark Jones International University ETH 501 Dr. Noce May 22, 2009 Abstract G-BioSport South has decided to go with random drug and alcohol testing with all employees and office personnel since rumors have escalated recently around the water cooler. There is the option of two different drug testing with different pricing and one is being more accurate than the other. How it can make for a safer work place and safer vitamins being produced in mass quantities. Prevent any lawsuits created by errors and bad judgments made by employees or office personnel working under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Testing everyone working for the company prevents testing certain individuals from others. Doing random drug testing will keep the company’s employee’s and office personnel free and independent from drinking and doing drugs. The Case of the High Flying Employees 1. Indicate how you have corrected for personal bias and your own blind spots-hubris-and have attended to the common good. I corrected any personal bias and blind spots by including all office personnel and all employees to participate in the random drug and alcohol testing. I have given anyone needing to get answers for any questions they may have to talk to me on this issue on the problems the South unit is having. The company is going to contribute a one time payment for anyone testing positive to get help through a rehabilitation center or alcohol treatment center to become independent from their addition problem. Quitting the treatment early will be considered as job termination. After the going through the complete treatment program the individual starts repeating and tests positive again is a automatic termination from the company. 2. Discuss whether or not the ethical analysis made sense. Did you like the results? What were the problems with the process? What are the sticking points? The ethical analysis does make sense in providing any individual having a drug or alcohol problem in order to save there job. I believe this is the only way to provide a safe working environment for the other employees and office personnel that we sell our vitamins to the customers outside of our company. I feel the problem with the process is indeed needed because of the potent herbs and the different chemicals being added together could cause serious problems if mixed wrong in producing the vitamins. The vitamins are to help customers to stay healthy and not jeopardize their help because errors of employees coming to work high or drunk. The sticky points of this problem are deciding which drug test to purchase and if we are going to test with urine specimens or by strands of hair to get close to 100 percent accuracy. 3. Do you get the sense that you would follow these results in real life? Why or why not? I believe I would follow the same procedures in real life since it pertains to the health of the population of the country. This process would decrease the amount the company and what the employees have to pay towards health insurance plans. Individuals would be healthier by eliminating drugs and alcohol from their daily diet. There will be fewer workers compensation claims filed with the random drug testing. 4. What insights do you have about this problem that you would like to share with others? What information would you appreciate from them? I would think that any individual that has a drug and/or alcohol problem feels he or she can come to me openly for help before the random testing begins. I believe that coming to work high or drunk does affect an individual’s performance in doing the job. Many hours of work are lost in the production of getting the vitamins on the market due to drugs and alcohol related problems. Coming to work high or drunk jeopardizes anyone having to work with another individual to get the job done by accidents and even death at times. I would like for input from the employees and office personnel on incidents of friends or family members found in a situation with drugs and/or alcohol caused serious injuries to another person at the monthly meeting. 5. How would adding the world of emotion and conscience help? Presenting the world of emotions and conscience into the company meeting can relieve everyone’s stress levels from thinking the testing is only targeted for certain individuals, while everyone will be tested randomly. This will keep any hostility down from individual’s acting out and causing commotions during working hours. It is possible for individuals to step forward and ask for help before even being testing and showing positive. This will not prevent any individual’s from being terminated should they show positive the next time. It will be considered under the one time the company pays for the treatment. 6. Consider the spiritual perspective-spirituality being defined as that which gives life and work meaning and purpose. As you begin to see yourself in light of the community, how can you (and others in the organization) begin to discipline your desires so you can live fully in the present with faith and trust, avoiding self-righteousness and self-deception? I believe by enforcing the random drug and alcohol testing within the South unit of the company will provide the satisfaction that the employees and the office personnel will have the thought of when will the next drug test is going to be and decide to quit the bad and illegal issues which will provide a safe and drug free workplace. Everyone will feel safer working together without the issue of accidents will be less frequent. 7. For the lens used in the game’s ethics case this week, explain how the philosophical theories that contributed to the lens helped or did not help you choose the option you chose? The option I decided to go with was to have the drug and alcohol testing for the entire South unit and not just for the employees working out in the departments. It is a known fact that office personnel enjoy going out drinking and some may do drugs. Their jobs are just important as the employees that produce the vitamins and herbs to be distributed to the entire world. This will provide more hours being worked with everyone.
